Stock Image Photographer VS Freelance Photographer

So, should you sell feet pics as a stock image photographer or a freelance photographer, and what’s the difference?

A Stock Image Photographer joins an online platform that sells their photos on their behalf (like Shutterstock). This involves taking their edited, final photos (that meet the submission requirements) and uploading them to be approved.

A freelance photographer either markets and sells their photos on their own platform (like Etsy or Shopify) OR works directly with a client and their vision to produce the photos to suit the clients needs.

Which one is better: freelance or stock photography?

Looking at freelance compared to stock photography is very much a personal decision. We go into more detail in our blog post “Taking Feet Pics”, however let’s look at a few of the differences here.

Photography is an art, and like any artist, a photographer loves to have free reign to explore their creativity. Freelance photography allows you to freely explore the subjects and styles you excel at best (and focus on what works!). It can also be much more lucrative than stock photography! Stock photography is a great option for photographers who don’t want the commitment of working with a client. It can also be passive income, as the stock photography site does the marketing.

The down-side when your photos are sold as stock, the agency will take a commission, and you’ll earn a royalties-based rate. The amount of money per photo can be very low (we’re talking pennies!). When you are only making cents on a photo, you need to work on volume. This means having an enormous amount of high quality, in-demand photos to sell as stock.

Here’s an insider tip for you – If you do a quick google search, you’ll find a ton of sites boasting about stock photography. And not many talking about freelance photography. Why? Bloggers are receiving affiliate commission to talk about stock photography (paid by Shutterstock and others).

This isn’t a bad thing, as affiliate links help fund the creation of the content we consume.

Just be informed that there is money in people promoting stock photography and not in freelance photography (because it’s a self-employed venture). How can you tell if a website is paid? They are required to mention on their website that they may received affiliate commissions.

So, should you sell feet pics? Ultimately, that decision is up to you. There are both pros and cons to consider before getting started in this unique form of photography. But if you’re willing to make the effort, selling feet pics can be a fun and easy way to make some extra money.
